Over the past year, local business owners have received nothing but bad news about the state of local shopping and the future of their stores. For example, the local business directory FindUsLocal.com reported heavily on the mass of retail store closings that occurred across the nation this past year. Retail store after retail store was forced to shutter its doors due to a lack of foot traffic and dismal sales. People were buying online rather than taking the time to find US local businesses in their own neighborhoods.
But this year’s holiday sales reports have turned all of that on its head.
How Consumers Shopped this Holiday Season
Compared to years past, consumers spend more time in local stores buying those Christmas gifts than they have in years past and many local businesses are cashing in on those holiday sales.. In fact, MasterCard just released a study today that shows this year’s Christmas spending was the biggest in history. Consumers spend well over $800 billion and experts attribute that to the early discounts that retailers offered and the rising employment rates.
It said that between November 1 and December 24, sales for both local businesses and online stores rose 4.9 percent. That’s the quickest year on year increase since 2011. Automobile sales were excluded in the report.
And here’s where the news gets good for local business owners. Online retailers saw an increase in sales of 18.1 percent this year during the holiday shopping, but according to Sarah Quinlan, who is the head of market insights for Mastercard Advisors, that accounts for only 11 or 12 percent of the total retail sales. Most of those sales went to local businesses. “There’s growth, don’t get me wrong,” she said, “But we still love the experience of being in store.” This is one of the biggest local business insights of the year.
Did You See Your Share of Holiday Shopping This Year?
Quinlan attributes the strong retail sales to retail shop owners who tried new and innovative strategies to bring in the holiday shoppers. For example, local businesses that create local business listings on local business directories like FindUsLocal.com likely saw more shoppers than those stores that didn’t. That’s because today’s consumers look online when they want to find US local businesses, even when they’re looking for a store in their community.
