I was visiting my hometown over the weekend and of course had to stop at Colon's for some of my fav's arroz con gandules, alcapurrias and pasteles. I am a niece from the original Colon family so this is the recipe I grew up with! I have to say I was quite disappointed. The rice had half rhe gandules it should have had and very little "authentic" flavor - very bland actually. The alcapurria was SO greasy it took two paper towels to dry some of it off of my one alcapurria. Once I bit in to it I realized how hard it was on the outside and how dry it was inside and again flavorless. What happened to the sofrito folks? I am waiting to have my pasteles at Christmas as I came home with one frozen dozen. I am hoping they won't be disappointing like the other items have been. Such a bummer as I was so looking forward to a great experience again! Leave those fantastic recipes intact - leave good enough alone!
